Layers of Identity

Continuing the exploration I began with "Ingredients of Identity." This earlier project, showcased at the Spinnerei Winter Rundgang in January, used food and memories of my grandmother to explore identity and rediscover lost cultures.

In "Layers of Identity," I delve deeper into personal and family stories, linking them to the broader history of the Indian subcontinent. This film in a form of a video installation explores themes of migration, the search for a home, and how experiences and memories shape identity. By comparing the cities of Karachi and Leipzig, I highlight both the shared and unique aspects of these places.

The film aims to narrate a story of migration from Nagpur, India, to Karachi, Pakistan, after the partition in 1947. The film uses a mix of archival and modern footage to capture changes and continuities in both places. My grandmother's home is a central symbol of personal history and change.

The house was a constant in my life until I moved to Germany. The theme of documentation and identity is explored through images of family archives, reflecting the layers of history and migration that define my identity.

"Layers of Identity" is presented at HALLE 14 – Centre for Contemporary Art in Leipzig from 19.07.2024 to 04.08.2024. The exhibition opens on 18.07.2024, at 18:00.
